Educator

In addition to being a world class saxophonist/ocmposer, SALIM WASHINGTON is a comitted scholar and educator who loves to serve the underserved  and disadvantaged populations.

He has a Ph.D from Harvard University, and is a professor at the Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College. Washington is a leading scholar of African American Studies and of what is now known as the new jazz studies.

He is the winner of several awards and scholarships, including the prestigious Fulbright Fellowship, which allowed him to study, teach, and perform jazz in South Africa during most of 2009. In additio to teaching at the university level, Washington is a believer of community service and has taught in New York's Jazzmobile program, and has led workshops In France, Ireland, Brazil, South Africa, Mozambique, and at various institutions in the United States. Salim has also taught music in jails and prisons in New York, Michigan, Massachusetts, and Nebraska. He has taught and mentored many students and musicians in Brazil and South Africa during his residencies there.
